Our founders
Three Amsterdammers, one simple belief.
In 2018 Jaron Borensztajn, Erik de Winter and Jelle Maijer founded Cargoroo on the idea that cities need better alternatives to private car ownership — and that everyone should be able to share in them.

Our story
From an Amsterdam idea to cities across Europe.
Cargoroo was founded in Amsterdam in 2018 by entrepreneurs Jaron Borensztajn, Erik de Winter and Jelle Maijer, who shared a simple belief: cities need better alternatives to private car ownership.
They recognised that while many people occasionally need the carrying capacity of a cargo bike — for school runs, grocery shopping, transporting children or moving larger items — few people need to own one themselves. By combining electric cargo bikes with a simple app-based rental system, Cargoroo set out to make this practical, sustainable form of transport accessible to everyone.
What began as an innovative mobility concept in the Netherlands quickly grew into one of Europe's pioneering shared e-cargo bike services. Over the following years, Cargoroo expanded across cities in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, helping thousands of residents embrace a cleaner, healthier and more convenient way to move around their communities.
The distinctive yellow cargo bikes became a familiar sight in neighbourhoods from Amsterdam and Utrecht to Antwerp and Berlin. Families used them for school drop-offs, residents for shopping trips, and local businesses for everyday transport. Along the way, Cargoroo helped demonstrate how shared cargo bikes could reduce car dependency, improve urban mobility and support more liveable cities.
Utrecht: a special chapter
Utrecht has always played a special role in the Cargoroo story. As one of the Netherlands' leading cycling cities and a recognised leader in sustainable urban transport, Utrecht embraced shared cargo bikes as part of its vision for cleaner, more people-friendly neighbourhoods. The city's continued commitment to innovative mobility solutions has helped shape the next chapter of Cargoroo's journey and is today our operational home.
A new chapter with MOBY
Today, Cargoroo is proudly operated by MOBY, an international mobility company founded in Dublin in 2020. MOBY operates public bike-sharing schemes and micromobility services across Europe and has built a reputation for delivering reliable, accessible and sustainable transport solutions in partnership with cities, businesses and communities.
By bringing together Cargoroo's trusted brand and pioneering heritage with MOBY's operational expertise and technology platform, we are building on the original vision that inspired Cargoroo from the beginning: making sustainable urban transport available whenever and wherever people need it.
Where we are today
Cargoroo relaunched in Utrecht with a new generation of shared electric cargo bikes designed for everyday life. Since then, we have expanded to The Hague, Groningen and Eindhoven, with plans to bring Cargoroo to many more cities across Europe in the years ahead. Whether you're bringing the children to school, collecting groceries, transporting bulky items or simply exploring your city, Cargoroo provides a practical alternative to the car for many of life's daily journeys.
Our mission remains unchanged: to help create healthier, more liveable cities by giving people easy access to shared electric cargo bikes and empowering more sustainable choices every day.
